History of the Ragdoll

History of the Ragdoll

The ragdoll arrived in Britain in 1981. Two friends Pat Brownsell and Lulu Rowley, saw this lovely breed in an American magazine and decided to import a couple of kittens each. Pat brought a Chocalate Bicolour male called Blossom Time Proper and a Seal Colourpoint female called Blossom Time Prim. Lulu imported a Seal Colourpoint male called Blossom Time Lad and a Seal Mitted female called Blossom Time Lass. These four ragdolls enabled the breeding programmes to commence.

Further Blossom Time cats were subsequently added. In due course, other American top lines were also imported, as they are to this day.

The ragdoll cat always has Blue eyes, the deeper the better. A silky dense coat which is relatively non matting. They are renouned for their laid back friendly and trusting natures. Ragdolls grow to become quite a large cat not maturing until they are about four years old.

There are three coat patterns to choose from in the ragdoll. These are the Colourpoint, the Mitted and the Bicolour.

The Colourpoint has darker colour on its mask, ears, paws and tail (called points) with the body colour being a contrasting lighter colour than the points.

The Mitted has a dark mask and tail the chin bib and underbody is all white with with white mittens on the front paws and dark front legs, with white boots on the back legs.

The Bicolour is the same as the mitted, but with the addition of all white front legs and an inverted V on the face.

Ragdolls come in the following colours Seal, Blue, Chocolate and Lilac, though presently there are very few Chocolate and Lilac colours available.

In recent years the introduction of Red, Cream colours and Tortoiseshell and Tabby patterns have been introduced.
